Cataraqui Canoe Club
Safety Recommendations for
Paddling from the Boathouse

Last updated September 2003
These recommendations are posted at the boathouse

1. Each person is responsible for his or her own safety. If you are unsure about your paddling ability, check with the Boathouse Supervisor before getting into your canoe or kayak. Tell the supervisor if you plan to be out of sight of the boathouse during your paddle.

2. Heavy weeds present a serious hazard if you upset your boat. Avoid paddling among the weeds often present in the middle of the river.

3. Wear your life jacket and carry an approved safety kit containing: a bailer, floating rope and a sound-making device.

4. Be aware of changing weather conditions, particularly high wind. If thunderclouds appear, or you hear thunder, stay off the water.

5. If you get into trouble, call for help. Blow three long blasts on your whistle. Remember that the further away from the boathouse you are, the less chance is that you will be seen or heard.

6. If someone else is in trouble, attempt to assist them yourself or call on others. If a motorboat is needed for a rescue, ask for help from the Rowing Club.

7. The telephone is located in the storage room. If you call 911: the Cataraqui Canoe Club is located at Orchard Park at the foot of Cataraqui Street, across from the River Mill Restaurant and the Woollen Mill.

8. A first aid kit is kept in the storage room.

9. The emergency exit is at the far end of the washroom corridor.
